Mexico City. When presenting the new security strategy, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the Calderón government’s war against drug trafficking will not return, but rather that the strengthening of intelligence and investigation will be prioritized; consolidating the National Guard and attention to the causes focusing on areas of high crime incidence, as in the case of Guanajuato.
During the conference, he highlighted that in this case, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch will meet with Governor Libia García to define some aspects of coordination and support. He recalled that this entity is where the highest homicide rate is recorded in the country and also a high incidence of drug consumption among young people that must be addressed with social policies.
Regarding the Sinaloa case, Sheinbaum highlighted that today the Secretaries of Security and Citizen Protection and National Defense will travel to the entity to agree on joint actions regarding the resurgence of violence in that entity.
However, he stressed that the origin of this violence involves actions by the United States government, an activity about which they have not provided all the corresponding information, which is why the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, will meet with the ambassador American, Ken Salazar, where one of the main issues is that they provide more information regarding the capture and transfer of drug traffickers to the United States.
Sheinbaum stressed the importance of consolidating the National Guard as a corporation within the Ministry of National Defense.
“The National Guard is already part of the Sedena and the general has a clear program to consolidate and strengthen the National Guard to strengthen capabilities with its command. It is a virtue.”
He highlighted that with this assignment his elements have access to Army social security services; training, his own career, his commanders are officers who are trained for it. An institution is being consolidated. If it had not remained in Sedena but one of those decided by the next president, such as the Federal Police.
García Harfuch detailed some aspects of the strategy, among which he highlighted the creation of an undersecretariat for Research and Intelligence in the SSPC to strengthen capabilities in this area and establish greater coordination with military intelligence and naval intelligence that allows underpinning its use in the fight against organized crime.
He stressed that they will seek to strengthen coordination because security tasks are a shared responsibility, so not only will coordination between federal corporations be increased, but also with state and municipal bodies.
In addition, they must strengthen crime prevention capabilities with local police forces. It seeks to meet objectives in various lines of action, consolidate the national intelligence system.
