A street sign on Abbey Road, where The Beatles’ famous album of the same name was recorded, has fetched £ 37,200 (over £ 43,000) at auction, the company reports. BBC Thursday. That is much more than the expected return, which was estimated at `1,000 to 2,000 euros.
The white sign with black and red lettering was designed by Sir Misha Black in 1967 and was one of 275 signs used in the Westminster area.
Other street signs including Eaton Place (£ 2,728) and Ebury Bridge Road (£ 1,364) went under the hammer for much less. In total, the proceeds were more than £ 143,000.
“It was amazing to see the level of interest in this auction and the competitive bidding from all over the world,” said auctioneer Catherine Southon.
Abbey Road is famous for its eponymous recording studio on the road. The Beatles recorded one of their most famous albums and the world famous cover photo was also taken on the street.
