After the pause of the pandemic, This August 6, the Saturday program “Summer Streets” returns, now expanded, to cover from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge, that is, almost the entire east side of Manhattan.
It will be repeated on Saturdays August 13 and 20, always from 7 am to 1 pmoffering a wide menu of free activities for children and adults throughout eight miles of car-free streets en Park Avenue, Lafayette Street y Center St hasta East 109th St.
The program includes free Citi Bike day passes Available August 6 with code SUMMER22. The initiative of New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) will also offer activities in the plan “Open Streets” and squares throughout the city during August.
From 2008 to 2019, the DOT organized “Summer Streets” from the Brooklyn Bridge to the middle of Central Park. Now in its expanded version almost two miles are added, to 109th St in Harlem.
Additionally, the mayor’s “Open Streets” plan was born at the height of the lockdown, in April 2020, as a way to make the city’s roads temporarily free of cars to facilitate social distancing. In 2021 the City Council voted to make this program permanent and DOT announced a new investment in support of community groups who wanted to organize an “open street” in their area.
The municipal transportation agency has secured almost $1.3 million dollars in federal stimulus funds this year to support these programs. More detailed information about “Summer Streets” y “Open Streets” here.
