“Street Chicken Rice Seller in Jakarta Sells Food for Only IDR 10,000 to Help Those in Need”

Jakarta

Selling chicken rice for only IDR 10,000. These sellers are willing not to make a lot of profit, in order to be able to help hungry people.

Even though all food ingredients went up, the chicken rice seller still did not increase the price of his food. The reason is because he wants everyone to be able to eat his food cheaply.

Reported by SAYS (07/04), a street chicken rice seller named Ong Eng Kim in Penang, Malaysia, is famous for his chicken rice which is only RM 3 (Rp 10,000). Apart from chicken rice, he also sells rice with roast pork and BBQ at the same price.

According to him, he used to sell the chicken rice for RM 5 (Rp 17,000) per serving. But every day he is only able to sell 7-8 chickens a day. He finally lowered the price of his chicken rice to RM3, and since then he has been able to sell 20 grilled chickens a day.

Ong realized that not everyone has that much money to be able to eat. In the end he didn’t care about his meager profit, or his diminishing income. The goal now is just to help people to be able to buy delicious and cheap food.

Ong himself only lowered his food prices in October last year. At first many thought that this was just a form of promotion, but Ong has no plans to increase the price of his food again.

“The price of RM3 for a serving of chicken rice is not temporary. When my customers found out about this, many came and bought food from me to show their support,” said Ong.

“Some customers have asked how I can survive selling chicken rice at very low prices. I told them, I still have a return on investment even though the profit is not much,” concluded Ong.

For each roasted chicken sold, he can earn around RM 6 (Rp 20,000). He hopes to sell up to 25 per day later.

“Even though the pandemic period is over, there are still many people who are having financial difficulties. Even though the profit is not much, the most important thing for me now is helping those who are lacking to be able to eat,” concluded Ong.
