Street along US Saudi embassy named after Khashoggi | Abroad

The board unanimously decided to rename the 213-meter-long New Hampshire Avenue, between the Saudi embassy and the Watergate complex, Jamal Khashoggi Way. The journalist was working for The Washington Post at the time of his death, in 2018 in the Turkish city of Istanbul. He was allegedly killed on the orders of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other senior government officials. According to Turkish justice, he was murdered and his body was then smuggled in parts from the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

According to the Washington city council, the journalist was “a fierce advocate for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.” By renaming the street name, the city council hopes to create a memorial “in his honor, which cannot be hidden or suppressed.”
