+++ opinion +++
In the past year and a half I have really recommended “La Flor” to anyone who hasn’t been up to three – and even after 18 months I don’t plan to stop as soon as … because of course you have to which is more than 14 hours long and cannot be easily put into a drawer, do more persuasive work than with a crisp 90 minutes!
As of today there is Part 1 of “La Flor” offered by MUBI – there, like at most festivals and at the German cinema release, the film is divided into three parts, all of which will be available on MUBI by the end of the week! Especially in lockdown, you should dare to try such an experiment – and thanks to the free trial month of the streaming service, you don’t even have to pay anything for it!
What exactly is “La Flor”?
“La Flor” is a (!) Film, but it consists of six chapters of different lengths – with the four main actresses playing a different role in each part. There’s a horror story about a cursed mummy and a six-hour, globe-spanning agent thriller …
… and of course also a “Twilight Zone” – meets – “Harry Potter” meta documentary about the director himself, who only wants to film trees because he got his four female stars after six years of shooting (“La Flor “Shot over ten years) can get on your nerves.
In the end, “La Flor” looks as if the creators had taken all conceivable ingredients from 120 years of film history in order to completely re-brew the idea of the cinema in their boiling, steaming witch’s kitchen! Director Mariano Llinás pays tribute to the various genres from B-movie horror films to martial arts agent strips, only to completely dismantle the usual conventions at the same time …
This is a rousing experiment that is exciting not only for a film critic like me – but also just so much fun! After all, all of this is not black and white slow cinema, but a colorful mix of genres that is terrific even over the extremely long running time.
My conclusion is therefore also: 5 stars – but something! One of the most exciting, funniest, most surprising, most fascinating cinema experiences of my life! Overcome your weaker self and dare!
