Think about it: do you currently consume more content on the internet or on traditional television? Possibly, there is a chance that the web will surpass the small screen – or at least equal it. A study carried out in the USA showed that, in 2023, the streaming may, for the first time, surpass the TV ratings.

A study by Insider Intelligence published last Thursday, 15, showed that US adults dedicate about 3 hours and 11 minutes to streaming per day. The account includes platforms like YouTube, Netflix and even TikTok.
Going against the grain, traditional television screen time is less than 3 hours. The bill includes open and subscription channels, satellite and even DVD.
Streaming outperforms TV as a reflection of new habits
The study also concluded that this is a reflection of new habits of a new generation of adults. In addition, he underlined that the trend is for streaming to increasingly take people’s attention, given that today’s teenagers are not in the habit of watching television.
The big “heads” of the movement are YouTube and Netflix. On average, people spend around 33 minutes on these platforms. Soon after is Hulu – service not yet available in Brazil -, with 24 minutes.
In the flashlight are Prime Video, with 11 minutes, and Disney+, with 8 minutes.
TikTok
Another app that has more and more screen time is TikTok. Although it is not exactly a streaming platform, people do consume content through this social network.
“If we only consider adult users of social networks and YouTube, TikTok already surpassed them all in terms of time spent on each platform,” says the study. “The battle between TikTok and Netflix is going to be a big one,” said Jasmine Enberg, an analyst at Insider Intelligence.
This is because, concludes the study, the barriers between what is a social network and what is entertainment are increasingly tenuous. TikTok itself is increasingly invested in getting its creators to make longer videos and live streams.
It may be that, in the future, it will have a range as similar as that of the YouTube and people start using it to watch more dense series and content.
