It is no surprise that 2020 was a year full of changes, where the Internet became one of the protagonists, since most of our daily activities went digital. In fact, according to the latest report from the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, mobile Internet traffic reached an annual increase of 43.4%. But, what did this increased use of mobile Internet translate into during 2020?
The latest mobile data traffic report delivered by the telecommunications company WOM, which makes a comparison between 2019 and 2020, reports that the peak traffic was 40% higher than in 2019.
“Understanding that consumption habits changed abruptly due to the new needs generated by the pandemic, is that during the year we delivered a series of benefits in additional gigabytes, release of social networks and different promotions, to respond to the need for connection and greater data demand. For this year, our efforts will be focused on continuing to innovate and deliver a good service at fair prices ”, explains Rodrigo Calbacho, Postpaid Market Manager at WOM.
On the other hand, streaming is positioned as the category with the highest total data traffic during the past year, going from 51% in 2019 to 60% in 2020. Along the same lines, calls and video calls made over the Internet , were the ones that presented the highest increase during the same period, presenting a variation of over 300% with respect to 2019, where the Zoom and Hangouts applications stand out.
Similarly, the top 5 of the applications with the highest data traffic per user, in 2020, was led by YouTube; Facebook, second; Blizzard, below; Instagram, in fourth place, and Amazon Prime.
What happened in regions?
Although all regions registered an increase in traffic compared to 2019, users from the most extreme areas were the ones that trafficked the most average data per user in 2020, where the Los Lagos regions stand out in the first place; second place, La Araucanía and third place, Aysén. However, the region that showed the greatest variation in traffic was Magallanes, with an increase of 58% compared to 2019.
