Do you feel like watching really strong, dark and demanding films on Netflix with “The Lady’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role? Then you have to hurry because “The Witch”, “Split” and “Thoroughbred” are only available there for a short time.
Thanks to her Emmy-nominated role in the Netflix mini-series “The Ladies’ Gambit”, Anya Taylor-Joy was on everyone’s lips in October 2020 and should have gained many new fans as a result. That she is one of the most talented and exciting actresses of her generation, however, was already evident in her previous roles – and three strong films with Taylor-Joy are now only available for a short time on Netflix, namely up to and including July 21, 2021:
“THE WITCH”: ANSPRUCHSVOLLER HORROR
“The Witch” from 2015 was the first leading role ever for Anya Taylor-Joy, who previously worked as a model, and a real hit right away: the horror drama, brilliantly staged by Robert Eggers (“The Lighthouse”), received 4 out of 5 stars from us with a special recommendation for all fans of cryptic horror films: “Anyone who likes to enjoy their horror with an extra pinch of aspiration has come to the right place with ‘The Witch’, which is as abysmally disturbing as it is beautifully photographed!”
In “The Witch” Taylor-Joy plays Thomasin, the eldest daughter of a family who lives in New England in 1630 on a remote farm on the edge of a large forest. After the family’s baby disappears without a trace under Thomasin’s supervision, the strict façade of the family begins to crack and one suspects one another to be in league with dark forces …
“SPLIT”: HORROR WITH A SURPRISE EFFECT
Just one year after “The Witch”, Anya Taylor-Joy’s career was given a new boost by “The Sixth Sense” director M. Night Shyamalan: In “Split”, Casey, played by her, is played with two other teenagers by a man (James McAvoy), whose body contains numerous, very different personalities.
The best horror films – sorted according to your ratings
Twist grandmaster Shyamalan of course also has numerous surprises in store in “Split”, but above all the horror thriller is also outstanding theatrical cinema in which McAvoy shines in alternation between numerous personalities and Taylor-Joy nevertheless delivers him a duel on equal terms. Conclusion of our 4-star review: “M. Night Shyamalan’s best film in many years. “
“THROAT BLOODED”: DEJECTIVE AND VICIOUS
Another year later, Anya Taylor-Joy starred in a film that, in our opinion, is actually the best of the three Netflix tips: “Thoroughbreds” (4.5 stars out of 5). There is not only a chess scene (little additional information for “The Queen’s Gambit” fans) and one of the last roles of Anton Yelchin, who died in 2016, but above all “A nasty beast from a movie – disturbingly cool, excitingly vicious and damn entertaining”.
In “Thoroughbred”, Taylor-Joy plays the young Lily, who befriends her once best friend Amanda (Olivia Cooke) again, although (or precisely because?) The two are very different. Because Lily’s stepfather Mark (Paul Sparks) wants to send her to a boarding school for young people with behavioral disorders, the plan slowly matures in the two teenagers to hire the drug dealer Tim (Anton Yelchin) for the murder of Mark …
