Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg finally opens up about the stray missile incident in Poland.
According to him, the deadly explosion in Poland may have been the result of fire from Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense systems. However, he argued that Russia bears the “primary responsibility” for the war.
“The investigation into this incident is ongoing and we have to await the results… But we have no indication that this was the result of a deliberate attack,” Stoltenberg said after chairing a meeting of NATO ambassadors on Wednesday ( 16/11/2022), cit AFP extension.
“Our initial analysis suggests that the crash was likely caused by a Ukrainian air defense missile launched to defend Ukrainian territory against a Russian cruise missile attack.
According to him, it is not Ukraine’s fault. The reason is that Ukraine is only trying to defend itself against Russian air strikes.
Similarly, Poland also said the stray missile that killed two people in a village near the border with Ukraine was likely caused by a Ukrainian air defense missile fired at a Russian attack.
Polish President Andrzej Duda tried to allay international fears of a further escalation of the war in Ukraine by saying there was “no indication that this was a deliberate attack on Poland”.
Duda said it was “very likely” that a Soviet-era missile was fired from Ukraine in what he called an “unfortunate incident”, but said Russia was to blame for its attack on Ukraine.
