Stray Dogs Found to Carry Drug-Resistant Candida Auris: Potential Health Risk Identified

Scientists at McMaster University have discovered and isolated the first live culture of the drug-resistant pathogen Candida auris from the ear canals of stray dogs.

The results of the study were published in the journal Journal of Fungi.

Candida auris, first reported in Japan in 2009, is a type of yeast that is resistant to many antifungal drugs. This fungus is very dangerous, after infection it causes persistent and severe infections. Experts estimate that approximately one in three patients with serious Candida auris infections do not survive.

In a new study, scientists have found that stray dogs carry drug-resistant strains of Candida auris, and they are concerned that the animals could become unintentional reservoirs of the pathogen. The researchers tested skin samples and ear swabs from 87 shelter dogs in Delhi. Of these, 42 animals were homeless and were already in intensive care due to chronic skin diseases – in four of them, the authors found signs of Candida auris in the ear canals.

“We need to be vigilant when monitoring dogs and other domestic and wild animals in areas where Candida auris is endemic. Although the pathogen is easily transmitted from person to person, the route of transmission among animals or from animals to humans is less clear and further research is required,” the study authors said.
