Stratolaunch Conducts Successful Air Test of Hypersonic Aircraft Talon-A

The private American company Stratolaunch said on Saturday that it had successfully completed the first air test of its reusable, powered hypersonic aircraft, Talon-A, but did not provide precise details.

“Today was a great day for the Stratolaunch team,” company president Zachary Crevor said in a statement. “I am extremely proud of their perseverance to get to this point.”

“Although I cannot disclose the exact altitude and speed that Talon-A reached, we reached hypersonic speeds approaching Mach 5 and collected a large amount of data of unimaginable value for our customers,” he added.

Defense officials hope to capitalize on the shift to hypersonic weapons not only by building them but also by developing new systems to detect and protect against them.

Stratolaunch aims to complete development of the reusable Talon-A this year.

The United States and its global competitors are accelerating work on hypersonic weapons, which travel in the upper atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound.
