Strategic Directions Series Warns of Cybersecurity Risks in Age of Artificial Intelligence

The Trends Research and Consulting Center issued the 18th issue of the Strategic Directions series in English, entitled: “Cybersecurity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” warning that the rapid development of artificial intelligence makes managing change in human societies more complex.

The new study, prepared by the Chairman of the Cybersecurity Council of the UAE Government, Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, stated that the laws, regulations and policies being put in place face difficulty in keeping pace with rapid technological developments, which imposes a challenge on various institutions to face the new reality.

The study confirmed that the increasing dependence on the Internet in all areas of life, whether social, political, economic, or even military, increases potential security risks, especially with the adoption of sensitive infrastructure on the Internet, such as surveillance and security systems, power stations, and autonomous transportation.

The study warned that the Internet infrastructure, which manages these intelligent interactions, is not free from vulnerabilities and security threats. She pointed out that the system based on “silicon” and the binary system used in computers and software, which has proven its great success over the past five decades, may not be able to face future challenges, which requires rethinking the mechanism of operation of this system, to ensure a stable and safe life. .

The study stressed that a security system based on the assumption that there are no weak points will not be sufficient to protect human societies that benefit from the achievements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, “robots,” and self-driving cars.

She added that if these systems are hacked, the losses will be catastrophic, and may take us back to pre-modern times, where the comfortable life provided by smart technology turns into a pile of electronic devices and piles of people in moments.
