Strategic cooperation between Russia and China with a common opponent of American hegemony – 2024-08-23 16:11:59

Closer relations between Russia and China are a “factor of stability” on the international stage, despite the conflict in Ukraine and tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said today, on the occasion of the visit of his Chinese counterpart Li Chiang in Moscow.

The strategic cooperation between the two countries, which want to face the American rival, has been strengthened since the beginning, in February 2022, of the attack of the Russian army in Ukraine, which China has never condemned.

“Our overall partnership and strategic cooperation are particularly important in a situation where new terms of the world order are being formed,” Mishustin emphasized.

“Under these conditions, the relationship between Russia and China is a strong factor of stability,” he said before the Chinese official.

Moscow and Beijing are jointly denouncing what they see as Western hegemony – and mainly American – in the world, and the Russian prime minister today called for the “protection of our common interests”.

He also said the share of the ruble and yuan in mutual payments is now “well above 95%”, with Russia committed to de-dollarizing its economy to limit the fallout from Western sanctions.

Unprecedented level of relationships

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was in Beijing in May alongside his counterpart Xi Jinping, welcomed in the Kremlin the fact that “trade relations” between Russia and China are “developing successfully”.

For his part, Li Chiang, quoted by Russian news agencies, expressed satisfaction at the “unprecedented level” of relations between the two countries, which was achieved under the “strong promotion” of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

China presents itself as neutral in the conflict in Ukraine and assures that it is not handing over any weapons to any side. However, Americans and Europeans often accuse it of providing Russia, which is the target of significant Western sanctions, with crucial financial support for its war effort.

Li Chiang’s trip to Russia comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected in Ukraine on Friday. India remains a close partner of Moscow but is also a regional rival of Beijing. It will be Modi’s first official visit there since assuming office 10 years ago.
