Strasbourg: teachers occupy a college to demand accommodation for homeless students

The mobilization continues at the Lezay Marnézia college in Strasbourg. The teachers, who have occupied the establishment since Friday evening, have also gone on strike since Tuesday morning. They are asking for accommodation solutions for 8 children who attend school in the establishment and who have been sleeping on the street for months : “We cannot accept that children sleep outside and then come to class” explains Baptiste Greib, one of the mobilized teachers. “They are in danger, they are tired, even though there are empty staff accommodations in our establishment“.

For us, this is a solution that is extremely simple” adds Céline Balasse, another teacher. “These accommodations are vacant. We open the doors and shelter the students until they manage to regularize their situation, earn money and pay rent.“. “Yesterday it was very cold, we received an alert message from one of our students, it hit us in the gut. It’s unbearable” concludes Agathe Bertrand, who is one of the teachers mobilized since last Friday.

“We appeal to the State” explains the CEA

The European community of Alsace, which manages the colleges, responds that it is not that simple and above all that emergency accommodation is not part of its competences. We appeal to the State for a solution to be found” explains Nicolas Matt, vice-president of the CEA in charge of youth. “Because children on the street are not understandable and I really hope that the actors will mobilize to find housing within the framework of each person’s skills.“.

The CEA has also contacted the prefecture to try to find solutions. The prefecture which did not wish to communicate on the subject. In the meantime, the teachers of the Lezay Marnésia college have voted to continue the occupation of the premises and the continuation of the strike. The FSU, the teaching union, gave them its support.
