Two trams collided today near the central station of Strasbourg, in eastern France, injuring dozens of people.
“The tally, which is not final, speaks of 30-35 wounded. The district attorney’s office is conducting an investigation, as is customary in these cases,” the district said.
According to the fire department, however, the injured are around 50.
The station, where several ambulances rushed to, has been cordoned off, according to an AFP journalist who was at the scene. Some of the injured were being transported by stretcher to the ambulances, others were receiving first aid on the spot.
A video shot by an eyewitness shows a chaotic scene, with two damaged trams inside the tunnel at station level. One appears to have derailed due to the severity of the collision.

Strasbourg mayor Jean Barseghian said the two trams collided head-on, after one of them had previously, for unknown reasons, moved in reverse.
“There are no dead, nor very seriously injured, according to the information I have at the moment. But apparently, the injured are in a state of shock because the collision was fierce,” he added.
The head of the local fire department, Rene Selier, said most of the injured had broken bones or bruises.
“I was on the stopped tram, another tram came in reverse (…) We heard a huge boom,” said Joan, one of the passengers.
The two train drivers were not injured but “were in shock,” said Emmanuel Hanot, the director of the Strasbourg Transport Company (CTS).
Strasbourg was the first major city in France to reopen its tram network in 1994. A similar accident occurred in the exact same spot in October 1998. At the time, 17 people were injured.
The first information spoke of at least 30 injured, with rescue crews having arrived at the scene for treatment.
