Ecologist mayor Jeanne Barseghian in Strasbourg is preparing a “gender-sensitive” budget. In fact, it is quite simply preparing a more balanced budget which goes in the direction of greater equality between women and men. For example, providing childcare so that women can participate in neighborhood assemblies or invite pregnant women to workshops to help them protect themselves from endocrine disruptors.
There are several ideas like that. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s going in the right direction. It’s like the playgrounds, the great idea of the mayor of Strasbourg, it was, like other mayors elsewhere, to degender the schoolyard where the boys occupy too much space playing football. Today, we have a generation of kids who think very early that the court is theirs.
In the city’s new budget, there are schoolyard greening works to rebalance the space a bit. In any case, these are positive, thoughtful, thoughtful initiatives. It’s better than subsidies paid anyhow for the construction of a mosque which refused to sign the charter of principles of Islam in France and which is not really sensitive to gender equality.
