Strange Phenomenon: The Nile River Turns Blood Red

Jakarta

The Nile River has shown strange phenomena. One of the most famous rivers in the world flows blood-red water. The researchers also tried to investigate the cause.

In this image released by the European Space Agency (ESA) in April 2016, you can see the waterway leading to Egypt turning red like blood. This image was taken by the Sentinel-3A satellite, part of the Copernicus mission program launched February 16, 2016.

Filmed on March 3, 2016, the image features the Nile and Delta, with deserts in northeastern Africa and parts of the Middle East. The capital of Egypt, Cairo, can be seen in the center of the image, with the Red Sea to the east. The satellite also captured the northern islands of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, and parts of Crete on the left side of the image.

As part of the Copernicus mission, Sentinel-3A measures Earth’s oceans, land, ice and atmosphere using sophisticated instruments to detect energy from the surface in nine spectral bands.

Researchers say the data collected by the satellite will help improve understanding of the state of vegetation around the world. The mission will also provide insight into forest fires, land use and water levels. This new ‘eye’ will not only capture images of the world’s seas and hills, but also give researchers the ability to monitor areas in real-time.

So, when carrying out this mission, it appears from a satellite photo that the appearance of the Nile River is red. The red color is reminiscent of stories written in the Scriptures, about the doom that befell the Ancient Egyptians. One of the ‘curse’ is turning the Nile River water into blood.

But of course the event was not doom as written in the Bible. The red color change that occurred in the Nile River at that time can be explained scientifically. “The red color indicates the presence of plant vegetation along the river because it cuts through the surrounding desert,” said ESA’s statement, as quoted from Daily Mail.

The blood red tide is caused by the presence of large amounts of red algae near the surface of the water. The red wave phenomenon is dangerous for living things in the sea. This is because the oxygen content in the water decreases while hydrogen sulfide and ammonia increase.

Therefore, Copernicus’ mission is very important because it contributes to monitoring global sea and land conditions, one of which is when the Nile River turns blood red. Sentinel-3 satellites systematically measure Earth’s oceans, land, ice and atmosphere to monitor large-scale global dynamics and provide critical information for ocean and weather forecasts.
