Strange bowel movements | All-round baby forum

Hello, I already apologize for the picture … but I’m worried. My little mouse, 5 months old and breastfed, has had a bit of blood in her diaper for a few days. Usually very little and she is fine. My midwife was there yesterday and said I should wait. But today she had a very strange diaper. Liquid and the color is really brown, it’s never been like that, rather yellow or sometimes greenish. What do you think about it? Is that still “normal? She only gets MuMi. I have an appointment with the pediatrician next week anyway. Do you think I should go earlier? Thanks and best regards.”

Ask the midwife again or call the pediatrician, they’ll tell you whether you should come.

If there was blood in the stool, I would go to the pediatrician with a stool sample.

Doesn’t have to be anything bad. My little one had too. It came from a milk protein allergy in her. So far, she too has only been breastfed.

Thanks for the answer Thiara82, but was your daughter’s blood threads or blood spots in the diaper or was the stool mixed with blood, so to speak? Or is that still a normal color?

My daughter had that too, she had two problems.
1. Cow’s milk protein intolerance
2. Breast milk induced colitis.
The latter was confirmed after I had been on an elimination diet for 4 weeks.
There were always dots or threads, etc.
When the bowel was already very irritated, it got bloodier.
Breast milk-induced colitis usually disappears with the addition of complementary foods.
And breastfeeding can continue if the child is otherwise symptom-free and thriving well.

Dear Jolina2019, How do you find out what it is? Do I have to have a colonoscopy? Or allergy test? We started with complementary food yesterday. With parsnip. Could this be the reason for the discoloration? Do you think there is blood in the stool in the picture or can the stool be that brown?

Parsnips can make a brownish stool.
Whether it is a cow’s milk protein intolerance, you would have to do without any dairy products for 4 weeks and then see whether it goes away, only if it is breast milk-induced colitis, it usually disappears with the complementary food.
For now I would not leave out anything dairy products and see how it develops, if it goes away, was it possibly colitis, it stays that way, if you go on an elimination diet where you omit all dairy products.
But I would definitely first discuss this with the pediatrician what he would think of such a procedure or what his advice would be in view of the young age.

I looked at the picture.
Do you still have the diaper?
Then I would take it to the pediatrician and show it off.
Looks a tad too red for me for parsnips, I have to say, but it can only be from the picture effect.

I have not and will not look at the picture. If there was blood in my stool, I would personally always see a doctor for a baby.

We then had to give a stool sample. It looked completely normal to me personally, and yet blood was found in the laboratory.
