Strange black stork migration route – Estonian border guards even help ornithologists – Abroad – News

Urmas Sellis, a well-known ornithologist in the circle of bird nest camera observers, turned to the staff of the center for help earlier this week, asking for help to find out what happened to the young stork Julgi.

The transmitter attached to the stork reported that from its native nest in central Estonia, it had probably traveled along the southern coast of Saaremaa towards Gotland, but then suddenly turned and began to move slowly not south or west, as a migratory bird would in the autumn, but north.

The ornithologist judged that Julge might have landed to rest on a ship heading north, so he asked specialists to make sure everything was in order with the bird.

Analyzing the information on all the vessels in the region, their direction and speed and matching it with the data of the Julge transmitter, the staff of the center found that the bird could be on the tanker “Delta Sailor”.

After contacting the crew, the assumption was confirmed – the stork had indeed visited this ship for some time, which would have taken it far north to the port of Primorsk in the Leningrad region of Russia.

But fortunately the bird had realized that this direction was not suitable for him, took off in the wings and turned south.

Nesting in the nest of the pair of black storks Jan and Janika in Jõgeva County started this year almost a month later than usual. Four juveniles hatched in the nest, but the youngest did not survive for a month, but two more juveniles left the nest in August, but fell prey to predators in the woods nearby.

Julge first flew out of the nest on August 23, but last appeared there on August 28, and then apparently began his journey to the warm lands.

According to the data of the transmitter, on August 29, around noon, the young stork met a tanker on its way, but had already spent the night on August 31 on the Polish coast.
