A stone tablet with the Ten Commandments that is around 1,500 years old is to be auctioned in New York. The piece could fetch between one and two million dollars (around 950,000 – 1.9 million euros), said the auction house Sotheby’s. This is the only panel of this type known in its entirety from this period.

The piece of marble, which is about 60 centimeters high and weighs 50 kilograms, has commandments and prohibitions carved in ancient Hebrew script – including prohibitions against murder and theft.

The stone was discovered in 1913 when a railway was built in southern Israel. However, the meaning was not recognized for a long time – the stone was walled up at the entrance of the house, with the writing side up, so that many people would walk over it. It wasn’t until the 1940s that scientists discovered what the record was. The piece is scheduled to be auctioned on December 18.
