Yvette Estermann on plexiglass, anger and masks

— –

The focus of the spring session was the corona discussion. The parliamentarians are still locked in plexiglass houses and additionally equipped with masks. It is a duty. Again and again politicians run against Plexiglas walls and thus remind of birds, which can not see clear glass walls either. This is how strange situations often arise …

My motion “health insurance light” as a cheap alternative to the current system did not get through. No wonder: Neither federal councilors nor national councilors have to worry about how they can pay their premiums. But for the population, these constantly rising costs are one of the greatest concerns!

Feedback from the population shows the findings of our society today. Every day we receive countless letters, e-mails and phone calls from concerned citizens. From this it is clear: The population has become very skeptical about the political decisions. Many people do not understand that they have to travel to work in full public transport but outside, on a terrace or in a “beer garden”, they cannot enjoy a drink or warm soup! Wearing masks was useless at first, then it became compulsory. Many people do not understand this “logic”! The communication of the Federal Council and the “Task Force” are also subject to massive criticism.

The freedom of the citizen is severely restricted by the corona measures, but there is still no absolute security. The US statesman Benjamin Franklin said back then: “Whoever gives up freedom to gain security will lose both in the end.” Democracy is suffering great damage today. The financial consequences of the lockdown are horrendous and the mental health of the citizens is damaged, as is the trust in the Federal Council and in politics as a whole. The consequences are difficult or impossible to repair.

During the session in Bern, parliamentarians from Lucerne will report on their everyday life in the Council on a freely chosen topic.
