Strade Maestre: learning by walking, the new educational project that raises awareness about respect for nature and rural environments

ROMA – The project starts Highwaysan initiative which provides the possibility of carrying out a school year on the go: an innovative teaching program which combines the study of traditional teachings with experience in the “classroom-world”: along the paths, through cities and small towns, in the sites of historical and archaeological interest, in businesses, schools and associations.

Who is the project aimed at? Organized by the social cooperative CamminaMenti, the project is aimed at fifteen young people aged between 16 and 17 from all over Italy, who will form a class that will leave in September for an educational journey of over a thousand kilometres. The teachers of this original semi-nomadic class will be the environmental hiking guides who are members of AIGAEItalian Association of Environmental Hiking Guides, who will accompany the students on a learning journey that will touch 13 Italian regions. We start from Orvieto in September 2024 and end the year in Veneto at the end of May 2025, after having crossed Lazio, Sicily, Sardinia and then going up Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia, Marche, Umbria, Campania, Abruzzo, Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. The trip involves an alternation between days on the move and residential days of discussion with peers in local schools where local experts will also be involved. The itinerant year ends with taking an aptitude test at a state public school.

Respect for nature. AIGAEwhich supports the project from the early stages of development, in 2021 thanks to an agreement signed with CamminaMenti is today the main partner of Highways and supports the initiative by facilitating not only the meeting between the guides present at a local level in the territories involved in the program but also by providing a “study backpack” to support the participation of girls and boys from families with low incomes. “We are very happy with this collaboration because it is a further initiative that our association supports to raise awareness among the new generations of respect and knowledge of nature and rural environments” – comments Guglielmo Ruggiero, president of AIGAE. “As the main partner of the project we will share with Strade Maestre the skills and consolidated experience of our guides, who are able to provide technical assistance but also carry out teaching, education, interpretation and environmental dissemination activities”.

Tradition and innovation. The teacher-guides who are preparing for the first school year on the road are specialized in different disciplines to be able to teach the different subjects (mathematics, science, physics, Italian, Latin, history, philosophy). “The scholastic path of Highways is designed to propose live and concrete teaching and learning experiences, combining theory and practice, study and comparison” – explains Marco Saverio Loperfido, creator of the project, educator and guide. “We will talk about geology on the slopes of Etna and the Campi Flegrei; of chemistry and the environment along a path on the Apennines or in an industrial plant, to give just a few examples,” he concludes. Highways It is aimed at young people who must attend the third or fourth year of secondary school. Registrations are open until the end of May.
