Story from book by writer Rutger Bregman is being made into a film | NOW

The true story of writer and historian Rutger Bregman about Tongan youths who survived on a desert island in the Pacific in 1966 for more than a year is made into a film by production company New Regency. Bregman reports this on Friday Twitter.

Bregman’s book was published in September last year Most people are good, which tells the story of the six teenagers from Tonga. An English pre-publication recently appeared in the English newspaper The Guardian, where several production companies turned to Bregman to film the story.

The account is about six young people who steal a fishing boat in 1965 and sail out to sea. After some time, they end up in a storm. The boys have to disembark and wash up on an uninhabited island after eight days. After fifteen months, they are rescued by an Australian captain.

“Many studios have approached me to buy the rights to the story, but of course it is not my story,” Bregman writes on Twitter. “People in Tonga have been telling their children for generations.”

In a few days, Bregman managed to get in touch with the living protagonist. “We agreed to work together and share all proceeds,” said Bregman, who donates his share to a charity in Tonga.

Production company New Regency previously produced, among others, the Hollywood films 12 Years a Slave, Birdman andThe Revenant.
