We are approaching National Day with stormy debris, and the big question is what the weather will be like. Last year there was glorious sunshine and blue skies in several places in Eastern Norway.
This year, however, there are other forecasts, which we will return to.
For Sunday, the Meteorological Institute sent out a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning. There will be large local differences in intensity, but the warning mainly applies to parts of Eastern Norway.
– We are expecting rather unstable air masses in Eastern Norway on Monday, says meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute, Per Egil Haga.

These are the most exposed
On Monday, the inhabitants of Eastern Norway can therefore expect extensive shower activity that includes both lightning and thunder. These areas in particular are at risk, according to the meteorologist:
Østfold, Vestfold, parts of Buskerud and parts of Oslo and Akershus.
– The greatest occurrence of lightning and thunder is expected from Monday afternoon, says Haga.
Nor can he rule out Southern Norway, even if the danger there is not so great as of now.

Lightning, thunder and rain
When asked where it will be worst, the meteorologist is careful not to say anything absolutely precise.
– It is always difficult to say anything absolutely precise when it comes to lightning and thunder. As of now, it still looks like the areas south of Mjøsa are the most exposed.
In addition to lightning and thunder, it seems that Monday will be characterized by rain showers over the whole of Eastern Norway.
– It doesn’t look like there will be torrential rain, but everyone in Eastern Norway will probably get one or more showers in the afternoon, says Haga and clarifies that the showers can also come earlier in the day.

You should avoid this
The meteorologist on duty points out that lightning is a dangerous phenomenon.
One should therefore not plan to go out by boat or go swimming on Monday, he says.
– You shouldn’t plan to play golf outdoors either, advises Haga.
Still uncertain
Back to the weather on National Day. The forecasts have kept us on the torture bench for the last few days, and there are probably many of us who are still wondering if we have to have the umbrella ready.
The meteorologist says that there is still some uncertainty related to the weather.
– The uncertainty lies in the low-pressure activity, whether it moves fast enough. How the weather turns out depends on how quickly the low pressure moves east, says Haga.
The dynamics between the low pressure and the high pressure is therefore what creates the great uncertainty.

– Can be challenging
One thing is certain though: it will get cooler.
– It will probably be below ten degrees early in the morning, so you should wear warmer clothes. In addition, there will be quite strong winds, which can be challenging for those who walk with flags, says Haga.
It still seems that the weather in Eastern Norway will improve during the day.
– For Oslo’s part, it will most likely be cloudy from the morning and light cloud cover throughout the afternoon. We can get up to 12-15 degrees in some places, says the meteorologist.
