Storms Return to New York Area After Sweltering Heat – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – A batch of storms is expected to return Wednesday after the tri-state area saw record temperatures.

The official start of summer is still a few weeks away, but Tuesday felt like August as many places in all three states set record high temperatures, though it will be a lot different on Wednesday.

Newark, Poughkeepsie, Bridgeport, Islip and JFK Airport in Queens all surpassed all-time highs on Tuesday afternoon. In Newark, it touched close to 100 degrees at one point in the afternoon.

One of the only places that didn’t hit a record was Central Park, which reached 93 degrees, just shy of the record set in 1939 of 96 degrees. However, as most would agree, it was still very hot in the city without setting a record, and it was still the hottest day of 2022 for Central Park so far.

But all that is about to change, after isolated showers moved in overnight, along with a weak backdoor cold front.

For Wednesday, temperatures are expected to be about 20 degrees lower. Wind blowing off the ocean will keep temperatures below 70 degrees through the afternoon, then comes the threat of severe weather. Lightning and damaging winds are possible with the storm line, though hail, flash flooding and tornadoes are unlikely at this point.

The greatest chance for severe weather remains west of New York City in northwestern New Jersey and elsewhere in the Hudson Valley and includes the possibility of damaging wind gusts and heavy rain.

The front will bring another chance for thunderstorms again on Thursday as the air remains unsettled. Straight line winds appear to be the main threat once again.

Temperatures are likely to stay in the 70s to 80s from Thursday through the weekend. After a chance for thunderstorms arrives on Thursday, the weekend appears to be clear with mostly sunny/partly cloudy skies.

The next chance for showers and thunderstorms after that won’t come until Wednesday and Thursday of next week, though temperatures will still be comfortable in the 70s to 80s.
