Storms cause damage in several towns in Jaén and Granada

Granada/Jaén (EFE).- The storms on Wednesday afternoon caused damage in several towns in the provinces of Granada and Jaén, which are working to return to normality.

Thus, the work of the neighbors and the collaboration of the Granada Provincial Council has allowed the reopening of the access road to Gobernador, in the West of Granada, closed by a flood after half an hour of storm that left mud and sludge and numerous damages.

Gobernador, a municipality of about 230 inhabitants located about 60 kilometers from Granada, has suffered extensive damage from the flooding of a stream, the third time in the last seven years that the flooding of the stream has filled its streets and houses with mud and clay.

The mayor of Gobernador, Patrocinio Ruano, explained to EFE that residents are focused on cleaning streets, homes and basements to restore normality after the torrential rains on Wednesday afternoon.

Overflow of the stream

The overflow of the stream that reaches Gobernador with the rise of water and sediment from nearby municipalities caused the closure of the A-401 highway, which has now reopened.

Since this road was built in the 1990s, according to the mayor, damage from storms has increased because the road prevents the stream from being diverted to other areas and flows directly into the municipality.

The overflow of this storm swept away several vehicles, caused damage to some warehouses and flooded homes and premises in the municipality, which has already received help from the Provincial Council of Granada.

Damage in the province of Jaén

In the province of Jaén, storms have caused around twenty incidents due to flooding of homes, puddles on secondary roads and fallen trees.

The most significant damage was located in La Cerradura, a district of Pegalajar, where in just a few minutes a strong downpour hit, dragging rocks and leaving mud up to three metres high in several streets of the town, according to what the mayor, Manuel Carrascosa, told EFE.

The storm has caused flooding in several private homes, swept away several vehicles and left considerable damage to street furniture.

The mayor has pointed out that the patron saint festivities of La Cerradura, scheduled for next weekend, have been postponed due to the damage to the square and other public roads in the town.

The road between Jaén and Granada is closed

The old national highway between Jaén and Granada was cut off after the storm, while drivers on the A44 Jaén-Granada motorway had to take refuge in a tunnel due to the force of the rain.

The 112 Andalucía emergency services have removed fallen tree branches from roads in the Jaén municipalities of Arroyo del Ojanco, Beas de Segura, Úbeda, Navas de San Juan, Úbeda, Vílches -in the town church square- and Siles.

A campsite in the Coto Ríos area, in Santiago-Pontones, was flooded as a result of heavy rains, although people were not in danger, so it was not evacuated.

In Santisteban del Puerto, and on the road that connects Úbeda with Sabiote, interventions were required due to puddles of water on the road, as well as to remove loose stones on the A-301 in Úbeda and on the JA-7103 in Navas de San Juan.

Finally, in Torreperogil and on Alaminos street in Úbeda, assistance from the 112 services was necessary due to flooding in homes. EFE
