Storm Wards Z: Russia’s Brutal Military System in Ukraine

“Storm Wards Z” is supposed to be the name of a military system Russia has adopted in Ukraine.

The system, according to the Swedish expert Jörgen Elfving, involves sending soldiers without proper training or effective weapons forward and straight into death.

– It may seem incomprehensible, it is a brutal tactic, says the former lieutenant colonel Elfving, to Swedish SVT.

– Will always live with risk

– Didn’t work

Avisa writes that Russia has spent a lot of resources investing in armed rapid reaction forces, so-called battalion battle groups.

Eflving says that it is a concept with high readiness and a lot of firepower that works well against unqualified resistance, and is said to have been used in the war in Georgia in 2008 and during the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

However, the tactic should not have worked during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to Elfving.

In the summer of 2022, however, Russia will have changed tactics and introduced the “Storm Wards Z” system.

According to a report from the think tank Royal United Services Institute the system consists of a hierarchy where at the bottom you find soldiers who are destined to be sacrificed.

– Does not signal strength

– Cheap and simple method

In a video SVT has published, the tactic is explained.

It involves small groups of two to five soldiers being sent out with a mission to reach a specific objective. These soldiers are often without special training and with ineffective weapons.

Often these groups meet resistance and are attacked and shot at or hit by mines.

In this way, the Russian forces get an overview of the opponent’s groupings.

– It is a cheap and simple method to get an overview of what is happening on the opponent’s side, says the former lieutenant colonel to SVT’s reporter.

Media must also have speculated whether returning soldiers are shot by their own forces.

However, this has not been confirmed by independent sources.
