The Tropical Storm Trami made landfall this Thursday in the northern Philippines, where it has caused flooding and left at least seven dead and seven missing, local authorities reported.
Trami landed in the northern province of Isabela, on the island of Luzon, early Thursday, according to the Philippine Meteorological Department, which indicated that the storm is carrying sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near its center with gusts of up to 160 kilometers per hour.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported this Thursday that at least seven people have died in Luzon, the country’s largest and most populous island, where Manila is located, and the Visayas. , an archipelago south of Luzon, due to the impact of Trami (Kristine in the Philippines).
Likewise, seven other people have been declared missing in different areas of the island of Luzon (Bicol, Calabarzon and Ilocos).
Philippine authorities indicated that predictions indicate that Trami will cross northern Luzon in the next 12 hours and could appear in waters west of the Ilocos region (northwest of the island) later today.
This is the eleventh tropical storm of the year in the Philippines and already yesterday, before it made landfall, it had affected more than a million people, authorities reported this Wednesday.
The Government of Manila, as well as those of other localities on the northern island of Luzon, issued statements the day before announcing the closure of schools and public offices for today, while the Army participated in rescue tasks in Bicol and other regions before the arrival of the storm.
This Wednesday there were already classes closed in parts of Luzon due to the first effects of the storm, which approached through the Pacific Ocean and has already caused flooding and landslides.
The Philippines experiences about 20 typhoons and tropical storms per year, especially in the rainy season, which usually begins in June and ends in November or December.
In early September, Storm Yagi, which on its way to Vietnam became the most powerful typhoon recorded this year in Asia, left at least 21 dead in the Philippines as it crossed Luzon.
