Currently not a day without a storm surge in the north: one on Tuesday, the next on Wednesday. After the storms “Ylenia”, “Zeynep” and “Antonia” there is still movement in the weather. Rail traffic is also disrupted.

There was another storm surge in Bremen and Hamburg. According to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the water level in Bremen reached 1.71 meters above mean high water (MHM) on Tuesday morning and 1.68 meters in Hamburg.

According to the Federal Office, significantly higher water levels on the German North Sea coast, in the Weser and Elbe area, can also be expected on Wednesday. “Please inform yourself regularly,” it says on the website of the office. Current forecast for Bremen: 1.50 meters above MHM around 7 a.m.

On the North Sea coast, one speaks of a storm surge when the flood water is at least 1.5 meters higher than normal. A severe or very severe storm surge is only spoken of from values ​​of 2.5 or 3.5 meters.

Bremen fire brigade: state of emergency for days

The north has already experienced several storm surges this year. It was only on Monday, when storm “Antonia” hit, that the Hamburg fish market in the Altona district was flooded again. At the weekend, as a result of a hurricane, there was a very severe storm surge with more than 3.5 meters above the mean high water for the first time since 2013.

The Bremen fire brigade speaks of a state of emergency that lasted for days, more than 3,000 emergency calls over the 112, more than 850 operations and 1,880 hours of operation, in which a total of 500 fire brigade and THW forces were involved. According to the fire brigade, no further storm surge-related operations have been added on Tuesday.

Rail traffic in the north further disrupted

Long-distance and regional traffic by Deutsche Bahn is still not back to normal in the north. According to current information, there will be disruptions in long-distance traffic until Wednesday: The ICE trains between Hamburg and Hanover will be delayed by around 60 minutes. “Individual trains will be diverted. The stops in Celle, Uelzen and Lüneburg can be omitted,” says the Deutsche Bahn website.

According to Bahn, some of the regional trains are still running with delays. Train cancellations are still possible. There are more severe impairments on the S5 line from Hanover via Hamelin to Paderborn. The route between Hamelin and Altenbeken is expected to be closed until Wednesday, and a replacement bus service has been set up.
