For at least the next 12-18 hours, stormy conditions will continue in the tri-state area, due to the passage of Storm Ophelia.
Our meteorologist Lucrecia Borchardt, from Los Guardianes del Tiempo, indicated that the rains and strong winds remain in northern New Jersey, in much of Long Island and will be reaching New York.
He also recalled the warning notices that are in effect, at least until 8:00 p.m. this Sunday. The first is due to strong waves, emitted in Nassau, Queens and Kings counties, and due to rip currents, in Long Island and the coastal areas of New Jersey.
More than 700 flights have been delayed by Storm Ophelia
Near LaGuardia Airport, winds blow at 33 miles per hour, while in the rest of New York they travel between 32 and 30 miles per hour. However, they could decrease in the next few hours.
Due to stormy conditions, major airports in the tri-state area have experienced delays and cancellations over the weekend:
John F. Kennedy: 253 delays and 11 cancellations LaGuardia: 227 delays and 3 cancellations Newark: 248 delays and 7 cancellations
Flood risk on Long Island
Our reporter Camila Montenegro, from Univision 41, reported from Long Beach that by 6:00 p.m. the waves were “pretty strong,” while the winds felt like blows.
“The hurricane center said these waves can cause backwash, opening up the risk of flooding,” he reported. Likewise, authorities are working on removing fallen trees to avoid accidents.
It is expected that by 8:00 p.m., the probability of precipitation will drop to 68% in the tri-state area, when at 6:00 p.m. it remained at 100%. For its part, at 9:00 pm it could decrease to 34% and 24% for 10:00 pm.
Lucrecia Borchardt added that the probability of rain will return to 100% by 1:00 in the morning.
