Storm of criticism of Jill Biden after comparing Latinos to tacos

An organization of Latino journalists called the ruling “a lack of cultural knowledge.” “We are not tacos. Don’t reduce us to a stereotype.” The White House has since apologized.

Correspondent Erik Mouthaan describes the first lady’s words as ‘a stupid mistake’ that the Bidens cannot afford. “In the autumn there are parliamentary elections, and the Democratic party is heading for losses. Every vote is needed. Then you cannot alienate a certain group with a phrase that is awkward to say the least. Immediately when Latino people think of their food comes across as a lack of respect.”

Republicans are jumping on top of the slip. “No wonder Latinos are fleeing the Democratic Party,” tweeted one MP. Mouthaan points out that in the 2020 election, the Democrats were shocked by the large number of Latino voters who voted for Trump.

Most recently, Republicans won a seat in a Texas Latino district in a by-election, even though that seat had been in Democratic hands for 30 years.

Just pure admiration

The White House responded in a statement to the riot: “The first lady apologizes that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and affection for the Latino community.”

The lunch where Biden spoke was hosted by a progressive Latino group, Unidos US, whose chairman spoke up for Jill Biden: “She’s a great amiga (girlfriend) of our community.”
