Storm makes landfall in US: East coast braces for Henri

Hurricane Henri hit the US East Coast during the night from Saturday to Sunday local time. There it weakened to a tropical storm. At the moment there is mainly a lot of rain, the peak of the storm is expected on Sunday afternoon.

The tropical storm brings wind speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour. Henri is expected to make landfall on Sunday around noon local time off Long Island (New York) or in New England (in the far northeast of the US). In New York City, a major pop concert in Central Park had to be canceled on Saturday due to the approaching storm.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo warned residents of the upcoming storm on Saturday. He asked the New Yorkers to take Henri seriously. As a precautionary measure, a state of emergency has been declared, so that coordination is in the hands of the federal level. For the city of New York, authorities expect only heavy rainfall and some minor flooding for the time being.

US President Joe Biden has already pledged federal emergency aid to the governors of seven threatened states on the US East Coast. Henri may lead to major power cuts, flooding and other storm damage. In several coastal towns in Connecticut, the population has been evacuated as a precaution.

About six million people live in the areas covered by the warning, according to CNN. For the northeast of the US, it has been since 1991 that such a violent storm made landfall.
