Trains are cancelled, flights are canceled – and thousands of households are temporarily without electricity. Storm low “Ylenia” whirls life from west to east upside down. On the German North Sea coast there is a warning of a storm surge on Thursday afternoon.
The Deutsche Bahn experienced delays and cancellations. Lufthansa canceled 20 flights at Frankfurt Airport.
According to the operator, connections to Berlin, Munich and Hamburg are affected at the largest German airport in Frankfurt. Around a dozen flights are canceled at Hamburg Airport.
Berlin-Brandenburg Airport BER interrupted aircraft handling on Thursday morning. This means that because of the strong gusts of wind, no machines are loaded or unloaded and initially no passengers can board the aircraft, as a spokesman for BER said.
Flight operations in Bavaria, on the other hand, were hardly affected. Munich, Nuremberg and Memmingen airports reported largely to completely normal operations and no damage on Thursday morning.
Little improvement in sight
According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the wind from low “Ylenia” should slowly decrease from Thursday afternoon. However, the breather should only be brief. The next hurricane – called “Zeynep” – is expected to come from the British Isles as early as Friday afternoon.
Especially on the coasts it should be rough from Friday to Saturday, as Franka Nawrath, DWD meteorologist, told the German Press Agency in Hamburg. “We warn of extreme hurricane gusts of up to 135 kilometers per hour on the North Sea coast.”
Extreme hurricane gusts with wind speeds of up to 135 kilometers per hour are therefore also expected on the Baltic Sea coast on Friday evening. In the other regions of the north, hurricane-like gusts or hurricane gusts can be expected. The force with which the hurricane will hit the north is still not 100 percent predictable.
