The storm that hit Germany caused at least one death, around 60 injuries and considerable damage, mainly in the west of the country, authorities reported yesterday.

The storm began on Friday and the damage is still being counted. In Rhineland Palatinadoa 38-year-old man died after suffering an electric shock while entering a flooded cellar, Koblenz police said.

The region of North Rhine Westphalia was particularly affected by the tornado that crossed Paderborn and left 43 injured, 13 of them seriously, the mayor of the city of about 150,000 inhabitants, Michael Dreier, explained in a press conference.

The police estimate the damage it caused at “several million” euros.

This phenomenon, extremely rare in Germany, also affected the municipalities of Lippstadt and Lütmarsen, two other cities located a few tens of kilometers from Paderborn, the German meteorological services indicated yesterday. But no injuries were reported.

The storm, which came after several days of abnormally high temperatures, caused extensive damage in this region of Germany, with countless trees uprooted and roofs torn off by the intervention forces.

The south was also affected. In the Roth region, a wooden hut where hikers had taken refuge collapsed. Fourteen people were injured, including a woman and a child seriously, Bavarian police said.

monkey pox

The health authorities of berlin yesterday reported two cases of monkey pox, bringing the number of confirmed infections in Germany to three. “It can be assumed that more infections will eventually be registered in the coming days. The condition of the patients is stable,” the regional Health Department reported in a statement.

Ongoing sequencing will determine whether it is the West African or African strain, he adds.

The director of the Infectology Clinic of the Berlin hospital de la Charité, Leif Erik Sander, pointed out that “the dynamics of the current outbreak of monkeypox are unusual and must therefore be taken very seriously” until they have been better determined and effectively interrupted. chains of infection and routes of transmission.
