Storm in New York: AUA-Dreamliner was about 17 hours late

The flight AUA OS 088, originally scheduled to land in Vienna Schwechat at 11:55 am on Sunday, landed at least 17 hours late on Monday morning. The complex circumstances that led to this extraordinary delay began with the outgoing flight, OS 087, from Vienna to New York.

SCHWECHAT. AUA flight OS 087, scheduled to depart Vienna Schwechat Airport at 1:15 p.m., started approximately 45 minutes late. On board the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with flight registration OE-LPM passengers were eagerly awaiting their journey to New York. Despite the initial delay, the flight initially took off without any special incidents.

Storm in New York: another airport in Boston

However, the planned route at New York’s JFK Airport was blocked by severe storms that severely affected air traffic in the region, AustrianWings also reported. Due to bad weather, the team decided to move to Boston. Then they had to fly several hold patterns first. After the passengers landed in Boston, they waited for the plane to fly on to New York. That night the OE-LPM was finally transferred to JFK. The plan was for the return flight OS 088 to take off on August 3rd at 9:45pm local time and arrive in Vienna on Sunday at 11:55am.
The new departure date has been set for 4:05pm local time. The plane landed around 5pm late on Monday morning.

Impact on passengers and airline

The long delay will have a major impact on passengers, who will have to change their flights and travel plans. Many of them may have missed important dates and events due to the delay. Austrian Airlines (AUA) also faces the challenge of organizing compensation and support services and dealing with logistical problems.

Austrian Airlines has already taken steps to inform affected passengers of the delay and offer them support. According to EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers are entitled to compensation under certain conditions, which may amount to 600 euros for a delay of more than three hours. The exact amount of compensation depends on the flight route and the reason for the delay.

Weather related challenges

Weather-related disruptions in air traffic are a well-known risk that is always a challenge for airlines. In such situations, pilots have to make complex decisions to ensure the safety of passengers. The move to Boston and the subsequent trip on the first landing attempt confirm the care and caution shown by the flight crew.
