Storm in Brienz: Insurance expects millions in damages

The Bern building insurance company GVB expects storm damage of 25 to 30 million francs following the severe storm on August 12 in the Bernese Oberland. It has already received around 200 damage reports, it announced on Tuesday.

The GVB expects a total of around 1,000 damage reports, it wrote in a statement. The communities of Brienz, Leissigen, Unterseen and Interlaken are particularly affected by the storm in the Bernese Oberland.

According to an initial assessment, the GVB expects the greatest damage to occur in the area around the Mühlebach in Brienz. However, access to the damaged buildings is currently still limited there.

On Monday evening, a heavy thunderstorm passed over the Bernese Oberland. In the Brienz district of Aenderdorf, the debris piled up several metres high on Tuesday. There were no deaths or serious injuries. (sda)
