Storm Eta is approaching Cuba, rescue work continues in Guatemala

Subsequently, it should hit the south of Florida. The U.S. state and island nations have issued warnings of a tropical storm. In Guatemala, rescue work continues after landslides caused by persistent downpours.

The center of the storm was located about 220 kilometers southwest of the central Cuban city of Camagüey on Saturday evening Eastern time (Sunday morning CET). The storm was moving northeast at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, accompanied by a storm at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The largest island in the Caribbean is forecast to arrive on Sunday and should hit the southern tip of Florida early Monday morning.

The worst hit Guatemala

According to the NHC, flash floods caused by heavy rainfall can affect the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and the Bahamas. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in eight districts on Saturday and urged residents to stock up. The authorities of Central American states from Panama to Mexico, whose shores Eta arrived on Tuesday as a severe hurricane of the fourth category, still add up to the loss of life and damage caused by landslides and floods. The victim balance sheet is expected to grow further.

The worst affected state in the region is probably Guatemala, where 15 deaths have been confirmed, but at least 109 people are missing. Rescue teams are looking for some of them in about 150 houses that have been flooded by landslides caused by torrential rains in a remote village in the Alta Verapaz region. At least 20 others were killed by storms in Honduras, five in Panama and two each in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. At least 20 victims report Mexico.
