The last few days have been quite stormy. First “Ylenia” and now “Zeynep” or “Eunice”: That’s how PwC UK puts it estimated the insured loss from “Eunice” to be between £250m and £350m (about US$272-476) through property damage, business and travel disruption.

“Like Storm Dudley, insured losses will consist primarily of damage to homes, commercial property and vehicles from falling trees and flying debris,” he said Mohammad KhanGeneral Insurance Leader at PwC UK, at the news agency Reuters quoted.

“Eunice” has caused great damage in Europe, so far nine people have died. Rail traffic was disrupted in many places and flights were cancelled. Tens of thousands of households were without electricity, reports tagesschau.de. In Amsterdam alone, three people were killed by falling trees. In Diemen in the east of the capital, a person died after a tree fell on his car. A 79-year-old Canadian died in Belgium. A man has been killed by a falling tree in south-east Ireland. According to the report, three people died in the British capital.

According to the actuarial consulting company Meyerthole Siems Kohlruss (MSK), “Ylenia” only caused damage of around 500 million euros on Thursday. Most recently, the storm “Nadia” in Germany caused costs in the hundreds of millions. According to an Aon calculation, these were much lower at 150 million than for “Ylenia”. According to MSK, storm “Roxana” caused damage of around 100 million euros at the beginning of February 2022.
