The Dennis storm that hit our country on Sunday was good for wind power.
No less than 30% of the total energy mix came from the wind, as announced Monday Elia, the manager of the high voltage network. That’s twice as much as the average. According to the Belgian Offshore Platform, more than half of Belgian wind production came from offshore wind turbines on Sunday. During the Ciara storm, which hit Belgium on February 9, a quarter of the energy mix came from wind power.
Wind energy is gaining importance in Belgium and in Europe where windmills are still being added. Last year, wind energy produced in our country amounted to 8 TWh, a record compared to 6.3 TWh in 2018. In Europe, 15.4 GW of wind turbines were added, WindEurope announced on Monday .
The number of production units has increased sharply, particularly in Great Britain and Spain. Germany has played a pioneering role for a long time, but is now lagging behind when it comes to new installations. WindEurope says more is needed for the European Union to meet its climate targets.
