Tropical Storm Debbie, which hit Florida on Monday morning with hurricane strength, has claimed the lives of at least four people. At the same time, there is a risk of causing “catastrophic flooding” in the southeastern United States.
A 13-year-old boy died from a falling tree. The incident occurred when the tree fell on his family’s mobile home in northwest Florida, local authorities said.
Two more people were killed in a crash in Dixie County. When the driver “lost control due to bad weather and wet road surface“, according to local police.
A semi-trailer driver also died near Tampa after plunging into a canal.
Hurricane Debbie weakened to a tropical storm on Monday, making landfall in Florida. In the evening he moved to Georgia. It is then expected to move offshore and then approach South Carolina on Thursday, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
After reaching 120 km/h, the storm’s winds later gusted to 75 km/h. The NHC had warned that on the coast the water level could rise by two meters.
“The fallout from Debbie is just beginning. And they will be felt all week along a section of the southeast coast,” warned Michael Brennan, the director of the NHC.
