The tropical storm Dana made landfall Thursday night local time on India‘s east coast, hitting the state of Odisha with torrential rain and winds of up to 110 km/h, with gusts of up to 120 km/h expected. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the storm will continue to move northwards in the next few hours, progressively weakening. At the moment, no victims or serious damage have been reported.
Odisha and the neighboring state of West Bengal were hit by heavy showers and uprooting winds trees and caused disruptions in transport networks. As a precaution, authorities evacuated around 600,000 people from high-risk areas, closing schools, canceling more than 200 trains and suspending flights to major cities in both states.
The authorities have placed 3 districts of Odisha on alert, where storm surges of up to one meter are expected which could cause further flooding in low-lying areas.
2023 has already proven to be a difficult year for India, with one of the deadliest cyclone seasons: 523 victims and damages estimated at 2.5 billion dollars.
