Storm Ciaran will approach the regions of Brittany during the night from Wednesday to Thursday where winds of 150km/h could be recorded on its trajectory. New Aquitaine will especially be affected by the very large seas which will be generated with a swell of 9 meters and new risks of submersion. In its wake, another stormy phenomenon could violently affect the Basque coast from November 2.
A yellow alert for floods and submersion waves is activated by Météo France on the Aquitaine coast this Wednesday, November 1. At the same time, a wave submergence phenomenon, associated with very strong waves, is expected.
🌬️Between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, the storm #ciaran will affect the northwest quarter of the country with very strong gusts of wind.
🌊Also be careful of the risk of submersion waves along the entire Atlantic coast and the English Channel

“An extremely powerful phenomenon which will affect Brittany with winds expected up to 140-150 km/h at the coast and above all very heavy seas which will rise with a swell of around 10 meters.”explains Thomas Beauquesne, Météo France forecaster in Bordeaux.
“New Aquitaine should be largely spared”and the only consequent impact could be that “this sea will form with an offshore swell of around 9 meters”. Practically speaking, the phenomenon could resemble what we experienced this week in Aquitaine with the wind and the high tidal coefficients.

The data still needs to be refined, such as the trajectory and power of the phenomenon. But Météo France warns of the fact that following storm Ciaran, another phenomenon, which cannot currently be described as a storm, “will follow at the bottom of the Bay of Biscay“. Depending on the scenarios, this “storm“could engender”violent phenomena during the night from Thursday to Friday and the morning of Friday“, with very strong winds Friday morning.
Beyond the wind, heavy rain is expected between Thursday and Saturday, with accumulations that could exceed 50mm in places, the equivalent of a month of rain.
On the sea side, this could be the most worrying. It will add sea of wind to the swell, which itself will add to the digging of Ciaran…” advances the forecaster who nevertheless specifies that other forecast hypotheses would minimize this phenomenon, which is why we must remain very cautious about these forecasts at this time. But it could be “an important issue for the Basque coast.
This is why, in recent days, with the various wave-submersion alerts and vigilance, the city of Biarritz, in the Basque Country, is in the process of deploying its anti-submersion protection system.
