Storm Ciarán, which rages across northwestern Europe, has already killed one person in France. Furthermore, flights were canceled and 1.2 million households in France are without steam. The storm, which is accompanied by wind speeds of up to 207 kilometers per hour, hit the United Kingdom, France, Spain and the Netherlands late Wednesday evening.
Ciarán reached the French coast in Brittany on Wednesday evening and caused a lot of inconvenience and damage. Code red, the highest warning level, was in force for several departments on the western French coast, but that alarm level has now been lifted.
The storm killed one person in France. In the northern department of Aisne, a truck driver died after a tree fell on his truck, transport minister Clément Beaune said on French radio.
Energy Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher writes on X, formerly Twitter, that 1.2 million households in France are without power due to the storm. We would be working hard to restore electricity.
The French railway company SNCF canceled many of its trains in the northwest of the country and on some lines to Paris. Eurostar warned of delays and some cancellations of trains from London to Paris and Brussels in both directions.
There is also a lot of nuisance in England, mainly in the south of the country. All sea connections from the port of Dover have been suspended and hundreds of schools have been closed.
On the island of Jersey, where code red applies, wind speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour have been recorded. About 35 people have been moved to hotels after their homes were damaged. All government buildings and schools are closed on the island and authorities are calling on residents to stay at home.
In Cornwall, in the southwest, 8,500 households are without power.
