Storm Boris leaves seven dead, missing and great devastation in five European countries

Torrential rains and flooding hit the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Romania.

Following the deaths of four people in southeastern Romania on Saturday, Boris claimed another life in that country on Sunday. In addition, one person drowned in Poland and a firefighter died in Austria in a rescue operation.

Four more people are missing in the Czech Republic.

Shocking images of the flooding taken by AFP photographers show entire neighbourhoods inundated, streets submerged in water, and residents rescued. The storm caused power outages in several countries, disruptions to transport networks and mass evacuations of residents.

In Romania, a fifth victim of the storm was found on Sunday in the worst-affected region of Galati (southeast), where thousands of homes were severely damaged.

In the village of Pechea, located in the Galati region, Sofia Basalic, 60, lost everything in the floods.

“The water entered the house, tore off the walls, everything. It took the chickens, the rabbits, everything. It took the stove, everything, the washing machine, the refrigerator, I have nothing left,” she told AFP.

On Saturday, Boris left four dead in southeastern Romania.

Thousands of people have been evacuated and operations are continuing on Sunday in Poland and the Czech Republic, where thousands of homes are without electricity.

“We have the first confirmed death by drowning, in the Klodzko region,” on the Polish-Czech border, said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Sunday, who has been travelling through the south-west of the country since Saturday, the area most affected by the floods.

In the Czech Republic, the situation is particularly serious in the north-east of the country, where a large part of the city of Opava has been evacuated due to the overflow of the river of the same name.

Heavy rains began early on Friday and are expected to last at least until Monday in the Czech Republic and Poland.
