Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) says it is strong to come to Kongsberg, two days after the attack that took the lives of five people.
The recent Minister of Justice arrived at Kongsberg together with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labor Party) just one day after the two entered government.
– It is strong considering what has happened. It is a visit that is characterized by great seriousness. I am very happy that we had the opportunity to come here and talk to those who are affected, says Mehl.
Støre and Mehl have earlier today had a meeting with the mayor of Kongsberg, Kari Anne Sand (Sp). Just before 6 pm, they meet the local community and lay flowers at the memorial.
– On behalf of the government, the Minister of Justice and I want to come to Konsberg to show our sympathy, the Prime Minister opens by saying.
– We know Kongsberg as a safe city, and is a safe city. But the unbelievable can also happen, and then there are each other we must turn to. For those of us who are politically responsible, the safety and security of our citizens is the most important thing we do. Then we must have police and skilled people who can help us ensure that security, says Støre.
– On behalf of the government, I thank you for giving candles and flowers, good thoughts, quiet moments, good hugs. Take care of each other. And especially that the young people get security and experience that we adults stand with them. And that the very oldest of us, who are also vulnerable in such a situation, experience that society stands together.
– We will remember those who meaninglessly lost their lives and send warm thoughts to survivors and all those who are directly affected. We light peace over the memory of those who have passed away, Støre concludes.
– It’s completely brutal. These are actions that are completely inhuman. It affects me very much, both as Minister of Justice, but also as a fellow human being. And being here is very strong. Lots of people who have lost someone and experienced that their safe society has been hit by a completely terrible attack, says Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl to Dagbladet.
She says that crises and unforeseen events can happen at any time, and that she was prepared to have to get into such a situation when she said yes to the job as Minister of Justice. A job she has been in since Thursday.
– The police must be allowed to conduct a thorough investigation. There are still witnesses who have not been questioned. There are several unresolved questions. It has been said that the work of the police will be evaluated, I am happy about that, says Mehl about the way forward in relation to the review of the work of the police.
– I’m glad we could come to Kongsberg. Kongsberg should not stand alone in what they stand for. It is good to see a society that stands up for each other when something like this happens, Støre tells Dagbladet.
– We must learn from the situation, we must also summarize when the police have finished their investigation. I can not pass judgment on the work done by the police. What we can learn is that exclusion, people who fall outside of everyday life, work life, it is vulnerable. There we all have a responsibility to ensure close society, Støre tells Dagbladet.
