Treatment of 12-year-old brain-dead Archie Battersbee in Britain may not be stopped today after all, reports The Guardian. The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has requested the Court of Appeal to reconsider the case. The hearing will take place at 11 a.m. (local time).

Archie’s parents had called in the UN and the Minister of Health. They say that the UK will be guilty of violating the rights of people with disabilities if treatment is stopped by the UK health service. The UN commission then asked that the treatment not be terminated as long as they were still studying the matter.

The boy has been in a coma for months in hospital with severe brain damage as a result of an accident. Yesterday doctors from the London hospital sent a letter to his parents and their lawyer stating to stop the medication and treatment from the boy. Today at 2 p.m. (local time) the treatment would be discontinued.

Parents not equal
Archie’s parents have been fighting the termination of treatment in court for a long time. They want Archie to be treated as long as his heart is still beating, but according to the doctors, the brain damage is irreparable.

The parents were unsuccessful in court and were also unsuccessful on appeal. Continued treatment of Archie would only delay his death, the judges ruled.
