/ world today news/ Russia’s decision to stop the implementation of the South Stream project represents for Moscow a short-term financial means of influencing relations with Europe, according to Sam Ori, vice president of the independent human rights organization Securing America’s Future Energy, dedicated to the issues of energy.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in Turkey that under the current circumstances, Russia cannot continue with the implementation of “South Stream”, mainly because of the non-constructive position of the European Union. “Starting the project now, when we don’t have Bulgaria’s approval, is ridiculous,” he said. For his part, the head of Gazprom, Alexey Miller, said that the South Stream project was closed.
At the moment, European countries do not produce shale gas, there are no large quantities of liquefied natural gas from the USA on the market, there are not many alternative sources of supply, so Russia has in its hands a financial lever to influence Europe, the expert told the Sputnik site. According to him, in the short term, Europe’s dependence on Russian oil and natural gas is a “potentially powerful strategy” for Moscow.
