A year and a half after the accident in which he was seriously injured and lost his sister, Robin van Roosmalen has put an end to his career. In Omroep Brabant radio program De Zuidtribune, the kickboxer says that during that difficult period he received little or no support from kickboxing organization Glory, where he became world champion several times.
Van Roosmalen already hinted on his Instagram page that he hoped Glory would call him for an invitation into the organization’s Hall of Fame. “It was a bit of a joke,” says the kickboxer in De Zuidtribune. “But yes, I do think I am entitled to that.”
‘Scandalous’
He finds it very annoying that Glory has not informed him since the accident, according to Van Roosmalen.
“With all due respect, but I think they haven’t treated me quite nicely lately. They’ve never invited me to an event in the Netherlands or abroad. I’ve been there since Glory 1. I’ve helped build Glory But then suddenly they are now discarding you.”
“They have not even shared my farewell post on Instagram yet. Not even made a call. It is actually, yes, scandalous,” concludes Van Roosmalen.
Accident
Robin van Roosmalen is a big name in the martial arts world. In the past, he was a kickboxing champion in the featherweights and lightweights with the martial arts federation Glory. In total, he is a seven-time world champion.
In January last year, however, disaster struck when Van Roosmalen and his sister Melissa were involved in an accident on the A2 near Utrecht. The two were in the emergency lane with bad luck. A truck driving over the hard shoulder hit the car.
The physical discomforts that Van Roosmalen was left with as a result of the accident make performing at the top level too difficult, says the seven-time world champion. “Mentally it is going well, but physically I can no longer participate at the highest level. The consequences of the accident have turned out to be too great.”
