Roma, football, the world of sport that no longer exists and which made people dream, rejoice and suffer. The presentation of Pasquale Pes’ book “Stopping in time” was the opportunity to bring together the great names of Rome’s golden age today in the press room of the Chamber of Deputies: Dodo Chierico, Antonio Di Carlo, Alberto Faccini, Massimiliano Cappioli, Tonino Tempestilli and Ettore Violason of the president of the second championship. The narrative was woven by Corriere dello Sport’s historic writer Guido D’Ubaldo, who took his first steps into the world of journalism right in Dino Viola’s Rome. Pasquale Pes’s life was all in a rush, without ever stopping, with Libya as a starting point, with sport immediately becoming a fatal attraction.
He has experienced memorable moments alongside characters such as Dino Viola and Luciano Gaucciof which he outlines the virtues and weaknesses, in a true autobiography full of anecdotes. In the book he recounts his entry into the Board of Directors of Roma, where he quickly became the trusted man of President Dino Viola and subsequently a sincere friend of Luciano Gaucci, alongside whom he made history by winning with the horse Tony Bin the Grand Prix of L’Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Pes remembered Dino Viola: “He was a martyr of football because he gave everything. Gaucci and Viola were completely different in character. Gaucci he gave his all to win: he was disqualified for 5 years and went to the bench anyway, every time there were 10 million lire fines and he paid them.”
Alfonso Morrone – President of the Italian Association of Sports Directors and International Federation of Sports Directors, which made the event possible, underlined the great participation: I have never seen such a packed room: Pes in the book tells about Roma, the history and a cross-section of the Italian society of the 80s” Paolo Centopresident of Roma Club Montecitoriois nostalgic for that Rome that no longer exists: “It’s the story of a football that was above all passion, not only of the fans but also of the owners. There will no longer be that football, there will no longer be managers like those present.”
Maurizio Gasparri he is one of the founders of the Roma Club. He took advantage of a pause in the voting in the Senate to pass: “I was supposed to get married on 14 May 1983 but the championship was going on and winning the scudetto was getting ever closer. That day there was Rome-Turin. My wife understood and we moved the wedding to May 21st. Among the parliamentarians present were also Silvestri, group leader of the M5S in the chamber and Maurizio Leo, deputy minister for the economy.
They were from Roma who won the scudetto Alberto Faccini (first goal of that championship in Cagliari): “We lived in a Rome made of magic, the city lived in that atmosphere where the result brought gratification, beauty, enthusiasm. And it wasn’t an easy period because it was the end of the years of lead. It was a wonderful time when I was a boy.”
Dodo Chierico he was on the pitch in that cursed Champions Cup final: “I remember Pes as a person who knew how to stay in their place, within a management and ownership where everyone was always ready to give advice and stay in the shadows. In those times we experienced humility, it’s a shame we weren’t mature enough to win the European Cup.
Maurizio Leo testified his friendship with Pasquale Pes«an entrepreneur who was born from nothing but who managed with commitment and determination to follow a professional path both in Italy and abroad by combining sporting commitment with entrepreneurial commitment and the human and social aspect».
Hector Viola he lived that era with pride: “It was a magnificent story of Rome’s 11-year presidency, we taught how to play winning football.”
By Carlo he recalled his relationship with Pes: “My professional path is linked to Pasqualefirst at Roma, then at Perugia, in the world of horses and now also in Kenya”.
The book is the autobiography of a successful entrepreneur, of a sports manager, of a man who does not forget his origins, even if Kenya has become his favorite place for many years. In his refuge in Malindi he wrote his autobiography.
Pes took advantage of the successes and mistakes of two great characters like Viola and Gaucci and managed to “stop in time”.
